About Joanne

Hello, I’m Joanne!
I’m an illustrator based in Cornwall, originally from Northern Ireland, with a particular love of curious characters, imagined worlds and stories with a slightly strange edge.
I work across children’s publishing, character design and world-building, combining traditional drawing with digital painting in Procreate and Photoshop.

Indigo Alice

Alongside my commissioned work, I have my own creative brand, Indigo Alice, which began in 2019 as a place to follow my own ideas and develop work outside of a client brief.
Over the years it has grown into a brand of its own, bringing together my love of curious characters, wildlife, folklore and gothic inspired illustration.
My illustrations now find their way onto greeting cards, gifts and art products, as well as into the characters and imaginary worlds that continue to grow behind them.
I’m a coffee fiend, graphic novel addict and a sucker for a good ghost story. I love folklore, strange old places and anything with a slightly gothic edge, which probably explains quite a lot about my work.

A little more about me...

Illustrated Cornwall map for Laura Likes
I grew up in Northern Ireland and later moved to Scotland, where I studied Illustration and Printmaking at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Dundee, graduating with First Class Honours.
After university I worked in Edinburgh before eventually heading south and making Cornwall my home.

Illustration & Client Work
Over the years I’ve worked on a wide range of illustration projects, from children’s books and character design, to maps, theatre, greetings cards, puzzles and album covers.
I particularly enjoy projects that involve characters, places and visual storytelling - whether that means developing a cast of peculiar characters or illustrating a map packed with tiny details.
My published picture book work includes Ginger Nut, Lost at the Zoo and The Giant Panda Party for Picture Kelpies, an imprint of Floris Books in Edinburgh. I illustrated The Battle of the Wordsmiths, part of the fantasy project The Wild Kingdoms, as well as some gaming assets. A new picture book series by a Devon author, Sally the Seasick Seagull, is coming this year.
